Len Crome Memorial Conference 2023: Spain in the European civil war
This conversation between leading historians of the Spanish Civil War Helen Graham and Paul Preston, chaired by Richard Baxell, charts the long roots of the Spanish Civil War. These roots go back at least to the First World War - not only with attempts to wipe out the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 but also to double down on any socially levelling reform inside the developed industrial heartlands of Europe, including Britain.

- Helen Graham is Emeritus Professor of modern European history at Royal Holloway University of London and is the author of ‘Interrogating Francoism' and ‘The Spanish Civil War: A Very Short Introduction’. She is also an IBMT Patron.

Genocides who murdered my family in Barcelona, I will never forget it, I will never forgive it...
Thank you for posting. He was a lover of one of my DNA relatives.
"The film on Sam Russell was wonderful - many thanks"
"very moving and much appreciated" Colin Chambers. "... brilliant film ..." "... a significant part of the evening ..." (comments at the book launch)
My brother Dave Buffman was killed in 1938 at the Battle of Ebro, just 3 weeks before the foreigners were told to leave Spain. He was 22. He died 4 years before I was born. Just about 4 years ago I was able to get the only photo I have of him in uniform in Spain from the IBMT in London via email from Jim Jump. His name is on a plaque in Leeds town hall, one of 8 killed from Leeds. I also was sent some documents. I really appreciate the work that the IBMT is doing. Yvonne Cheyney, Southern California
Brilliant discussion:-)
Great conversation!
A fitting tribute to true great men of steel HEROES all them who fought the dirty horrible fascist scumbags proper men of true honour integrity and as game as lions
"... yes that's a lovely performance of it. Thanks for sharing it here." " Great song. Fitting tribute to the legendary Irish Socialist Republican and Anti-Fascist fighter, Frank Ryan." Facebook 12 nov 21
Paul Preston is a well known anti Spanish anti Franco troll with strong left wing Masonic bias His books are as good as toilet paper
Well said camarada.
"That`s a wonderful tribute." (Facebook 24thOctober 2021)
Great job comrades
Honour to all the International Brigaders!!!! Thanks to the British Batallion!! Thanks IBMT.
An excellent tribute film to our dear friend Manus. (message 15th October 2021)
The tribute to Manus is absolutely superb and I was in tears at the end of it. Such a fitting tribute to a very special man. (message. 14th October 2021)
Brilliant memorial.
The film is wonderful .... Thank you so much . (Facebook - 12th October 2021)
Every minute is wonderful. What is the tune near the end about our songs are not for slavery? I don't know it ? (Facebook: 12th October 2021)
The song is 'The Minstrel Boy.' An Old Irish song written by Thomas Moore about the 1798 rebellion. BTW also taken up in USA. Brenda O'Riordan sang it when we were on an IBMT visit to Spain out in the open looking out over the last battlefields of the International Brigades. The verse you refer to goes: "The harp he loved nare spoke again For he tore its cords asunder And said, "No chains shall sully thee Thou soul of love and brav'ry Thy songs were made for the pure and free They shall never sound in slavery"
What a beautiful and moving tribute. GRMA. A light and inspiration to all. Solas geal ar anam uasal Mhánuis. Love this 💕Tribute to Manus. "¡Excelente!" "What a wonderful tribute. Very moving." "Outstanding!!!🙏❤" "Every minute is wonderful." Some comments from Facebook, 9th October 2021.
lol... there were far more Irishmen alongside Franco's forces...than amongst the republicans... where they killed each other between reds and anarchists in Catalogna... Or Albacete, where the reds killed many more "volonteers" who did not comply with the rules of the "Party"... t han the "fascists" did... lol
It is true that more Irishmen went with Franco - it''s not true that they fought in the SCW. A case of friendly fire killed some bandera men, and when they were ordered into action on the front, they rebelled, so were sent home. The Republican/Left forces honorably fought fascism.
Great vid!
Thank you gald you liked it.
I would like this opportunity to pay tribute to the memory of the British artist Felicia Mary Browne who was shot dead by Francos Nationalists at Tardienta in August 1936 while she was part of a brigade attempting to blow up a munitions train. Her body was never recovered.
Thank you for your comment. You can hear Glenda Browne reading a piece from Brinkman's report of Felicia's death filmed just a few yards from the bridge they tried to blow up. There's a photo of the bridge as it is now under the video if you scroll down. Salud! flic.kr/p/qQ9b86
@@IBMTnews Thank you very much for sending me this information .Over the years I occasionally do some research into Felicias life....but never thought I would come across this video clip.I still have an article from The Guardian from July 1996 which mentions her at length and a book of Claude Cockburns writings which includes his recollection of a visit to her home in the early 1930's. Thanks once again and very best wishes.John Slater
My grandfather was I.B and I and my family remain proud of what he did. His brother was killed there and my brother now lives in Spain. So forever a part of spain will be with us and a part of us will be in Spain.
Thank you for your comments.

Funny that you forgot to say that it was the party considered in the right that approved and supported vote for women, unlike the socialist party you were against women's vote. Total bullshit and biased speech, you can easily check on the internet what socialist Margarita Nielsen said and thought, she was very much for murdering woman, not just men, that were either religious or not supporters of the frente popular.
god bless jeremy
Vivan las Brigadas Internacionales!
Long live to the Volunteers for Liberty!
Viva XV Brigada
A really uplifting montage of song and readings and video - good to share in these times especially.
Indeed ... online world to the rescue ... some things we can do on our own ... but others need that community togetherness ...
My Great Uncle John Sean Redmond died at the battle of Aragon with people like Len McCluskey speaking up for the International Brigade Volunteers who died and those who survived its a sad day especially when Corbyn is used in the same sentence .
I read somewhere that there was a platoon of Filipino brigaders (around 50, but in separate units) that fought in defence of the Republic. The Spanish released the Philippines in 1898, so to those brigaders, defending the legally elected Second Spanish Republic was probably like repaying a debt to the Spanish people. There was also a company (around 80 Filipinos) that fought for the Nationalists. Even now, the left/right divide in the Philippines is very obvious. Big-name corporations and establishments often don't like leftists and vise-versa. Even clans are broken apart because of political ideologies.
Thank you for your informative comments.
Thank you very much for your work. The magnificent example of the Internacional Brigades must prevail and the people must know their story. I´m from a city of Spain, Almansa (next to Albacete). Many men and women of the International Brigades came to Almansa during the Spanish Civil War.
Thank you for your appreciation.
Good old Bic, still miss him
Is that a poppy wreath I see...?
great!

Great stuff, but a terrible shame the library is so inaccessible!
Thank you for your appreciation of this encouragement film. Being a Library it has to be somewhere - in this case in London. However, the Library are working hard to digitise resources for online information and access. See for instance the online catalogue which covers all the collections including the Spanish Civil War and is itself a wealth of onformation. marx.soutron.net/Portal/Default/en-GB/Search/SimpleSearch Marx Memorial Library homepage www.marx-memorial-library.org/
It was an honour to be there. Very moving then as always. No Pasaran!
